Don't I have to be healthy to exercise?

You may  think you have to be healthy to exercise. It has been show that exercise is safe for most seniors as long as you check with your doctor before you start. Contraindications for exercise would be if you have an unstable or progressive health problem like high blood pressure, cancer, or some heart arrhythmias.

I think I am way too old to exercise

Think you are too old to exercise? It has been shown that seniors in their 90’s can double their strength with a progressive resistance program for the arms, legs, and back.

I would like to exercise but I have a COPD

I can’t exercise because I have a chronic health condition like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or arthritis or coronary artery disease diabetes. Well, believe it or not, many of these chronic conditions actually get better with increased activity and exercise.

Don't I need special equipment to exercise?

You may think you need special clothing or equipment. You don't need a lot. All you need is loose fitting comfortable clothing and good shoes, some inexpensive hand weights, and an armless chair.

Isn't there a lot of pain when you exercise?

You may remember exercise as no pain no gain, and that doesn’t sound good when you are older. No, we do not want pain. If you have pain, there is a problem. Exercise should feel good. If you have pain, especially in your joints, then you are not exercising correctly or you have an orthopedic problem that needs professional attention.

Well, I am too busy anyway..

You may think you are too busy to exercise, and have just too much to do during the day. How about 30 minutes? It’s shown that just 30 minutes a day of moderate activity will improve your strength, heart and lungs.
